For this assignment, I chose the artist, Giotto di Bondone, and the Madonna
Enthroned, or Ognissanti Madonna. The Italian painter was born in 1266 or 1267
and passed January 8, 1337. Considered one of the most influential painters of the
14th century and the father of European painting. Giotto is considered an important
Italian painter of the 14th century. His works resemble the Renaissance style, which
would become known a century later. The altarpiece, Madonna Enthroned is the
only universally accepted panel painting created by Giotto despite it’s
undocumented. The Madonna Enthroned created in the year 1310; its height is 325
cm and length 204, on a tempera medium on wooden panels.
The Madonna Enthroned is currently in the Uffizi Gallery of Florence, Italy. (Uffizi
Gallery) (Peter J. Murray. 2019) The panel, defined as the Ognissanti Madonna
(Madonna Enthroned) after the church (Florentine church of the Ognissanti or All
Saints) as originally installed, has the same vigor of exemplification as the frescoes
at Padua and is dated by art historians as being painted during the l4th century. Art
historians argue due to the few documents supporting the creation of the Madonna
Enthroned as the work of Giotto. It is not listed as one of his many accomplishments
and began his legacy. (Uffizi Gallery) (Peter J. Murray. 2019)
Located in the Ognissanti Franciscan church, it’s original home was the Madonna
Enthroned painted. Constructed for the Humiliati, a spiritual order during this time,
the church had numerous praised painted and designed for it. Giotto would
specifically design the Madonna Enthroned as an elaborate altarpiece. The subject of
this painting is customary, a religious depiction of the Virgin Mary- Madonna,
holding the Christ child in her lap. Surround the Virgin marys are angels and saints.
