Phenylketonuria
(PKU) is a test
that is
completed on all
newborns as
part of the
newborn
screening
process. This is
done as a blood
test 24-72 hours
after birth to
check the
phenylalanine
(Phe) levels in
the body
(Phenylketonuria
(PKU) Screening:
MedlinePlus
Medical Test,
2020). A heel
stick is
performed on
the baby to
collect said
blood sample.
A positive PKU
result indicates
that there is too
much Phe in the
blood. The body
is preventing the
breakdown of
Phe (the part of
proteins that is
found in some
foods and
aspartame). The
baby will need
lifetime diet
modification,
beginning with
special PKU
formula, mom
can still breast
feed in
moderation
(Phenylketonuria
(PKU) Screening:
MedlinePlus
Medical Test,
2020).
Education to
family and
patient when
old enough
on avoiding
foods which
include but
are not
limited to:
milk, eggs,
cheese,
chicken, beef,
pork, fish,
aspartame,
and grains.
Educational
information
should be
provided that
a side effect
of PKU is
convulsions
and patient
should be
monitored for
new onset
(Belleza,
2018).
Registered
Dietitian: A RD
would be part of
the team
because their
diet would have
to be managed,
especially an
infant the RD will
determine how
much breastmilk
to PKU formula
ratio the infant
may have.
Neurologist: A
neurologist
would be
onboard for
monitoring the
condition as
some S/S may
include seizures,
tremors, tight
muscles,
increased
reflexes, or
involuntary
movements
(Atwall, 2019).
National PKU
Alliance: A
national nonprofit
organize that
unites adults and
families.
Children’s PKU
Network: A
nonprofit
organization that
aids individuals
and families with
PKU through
public awareness,
education, and
assistance to help
individuals reach
their full potential
(Phenylketonuria,
n.d.).
National PKU
News: Provides
links to news
resources and

information
(Phenylketonuria,
n.d.).
