At the start of the 20th century the nation was at a critical turning point. During the twenty years from 1900 to 1920
technological, political, economic, and social developments transformed the country in ways that still affect us today.
Select one reason why these were “pivotal decades” and analyze the events associated with its historical
significance. Provide support for your opinion, using information from a scholarly source. Also, incorporate and cite in
APA format one of the primary sources in your response that you found in the textbook.
Your initial post should be at least 150 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s)
and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts
by Day 7. In your response to your classmates, comment on their reason why these were pivotal decades. Also,
compare and contrast to your own selection.
The twenty years spanning from 1900-1920 the nation saw many developments that still affect us today. Cities were
the site of extremely diverse and lively cultural developments. There was an increase in leisure pastime activities
especially among the middle class. Baseball both as an active pastime and as a professional spectator sport became
one of the most popular forms of entertainment.
Baseball which had been around since the mid 1800's, by the turn of the 20th century had become America's
national pastime. White collar workers flocked to the ball parks during the weeks to watch games and when the
games started being played on Sunday's blue collar workers started attending. Even America's favorite pastime could
not be without scandal. In the 1919 World Series between the Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds, the Reds
won the series because seven White Sox players had been paid to throw the series. The effects of this scandal still
continue today. "Shoeless Joe" Jackson, one of the alleged participants and one of the greatest players of all time, is
still ineligible for election into the Baseball Hall of Fame (Bowles, M. D. (2011) p. 118). Even with the scandal baseball
as a pastime helped people forget their troubles for a few hours. President Herbert Hover said "Next to religion
baseball has furnished a greater impact on America than any other institution".
In the later years baseball was still without scandal. In 1989 the all time hits leader Pete Rose agreed to
permanent ineligibility from baseball for accusations that he bet on baseball while playing for and managing the
Cincinnati Reds. This permanent ineligibility has kept him from being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Baseball today is still a favorite pastime in America. Each year millions of fans flock to ballparks all around
America to watch their favorite teams from little league, high school, college, minor league and the major leagues.
