Overeating and Obesity
Obesity has been an ongoing health problem in the United States that affects a lot of
people. In 2018, North America had the highest obesity rates in North America. 36.2 percent of
the population had a body mass index of 30.0 or more. This means that approximately 91 million
people struggle with obesity and the effects it has on their mental and physical health (Dillinger,
2018). Although the main reasons for obesity is overeating - especially foods that are high in fats
and sugar - or the lack of physical activity, there are also other factors that contribute to obesity
(Balentine, 2019). These factors all include biological, psychological and cultural influences.
There are multiple biological factors that contribute to obesity. We’ll be looking at the
influence of sugar, genetics and hormones. Even though sugar is important for energy, it contains
a lot of calories, but not a lot of nutrients. A small amount of a sugar product contains a lot of
calories - 16 calories in one teaspoon (4.2g) of sugar. When people regularly consume products
with sugar, they gain body fat quickly (Bressan, 2007). Consuming a lot of sugar leads to high
blood sugar levels. If the high blood sugar levels stay high for a long period of time, it is known
as hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia causes excessive weight gain, because it contributes to insulin
resistance. Insulin helps turn sugar into energy that your body needs to function. The insulin
resistance that high blood sugar levels cause, only responds to the fat storing hormones in the
body, therefore resulting in weight gain (Gokulakrishnan; Deepa; Monickaraj; Mohan, 2011). A
lot of foods that contain high sugar amounts tend to be less filling than other foods. They lack the
necessary nutrients needed to give the body the feeling of being full. Consequently, people still
feel hungry after consuming these foods, so they eat more of these foods in order to feel full. As
a result they consume large amounts of sugar that leads to weight gain (Kubala, 2019). Another
biological factor is genetics. Genetics alone does not cause obesity, but it does contribute to
