A Right to Marry

Do Gay People have the Right to get Married?
Throughout American history, social rights have changed drastically. In the beginning of
the U.S they recognized slavery as being right and fair. As the country expanded, the outlook of
some people changed and so the Civil War began. Even though the country was deeply divided,
the North and South stood up and fought for what they believed in. Slaves were granted
independence after much hardship, and finally given the same rights as other Americans. In the
1960’s there was a social movement of women suffrage, they had to fight for their rights and to
have the same opportunity as men. Women were beaten for protesting, kept prisoners and
arrested for wanting to vote. With due time, women were given the same rights. Today we face
yet another social right movement, the gay community is fighting bravely and relentlessly for
equal rights - gay couples do not have the same privileges to get married in a civil union, or even
be recognized by some states. The United States has always been proud of its independence from
racism and discrimination, and because of this, gay couples should be allowed the same rights as
heterosexual couples.
For several decades, the perspectives of same-sex marriage have ranged across the
evolution of Americans. President Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996
which gave other states the choice to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages. Marriage is both
ubiquitous and central. However, the term “marriage” implies only the legal union of husband
and wife between one man and one woman as defined by the Defense of Marriage Act
(MacKinnon). Nevertheless, marriage isn’t a trivial matter for many. It’s a gateway to achieving
happiness, something that people strive towards and keep on aspiring to, again and again, even
though their experience has not been as happy as heterosexual couples. To be told that you can’t
get married is therefore to be excluded from one of the American life cycle’s defining rituals.
