Week #3 “Constancy of purpose”
One of the greatest services a leader can provide to his or her followers is constancy of
purpose. When the going gets rough or temptations and distractions come with short-
term success or set-backs, people will look to their leaders to see how they will
respond. Will they stay on course and remain true to their mission and values, or will
they give up and give in to the pressures of the moment?
Address the following discussion questions:
1. Think of a time in your life when a leader you were following stayed strong and on
purpose even in the face of tremendous pressure to give up and give in. What was
the long-range impact on your desire to follow and trust that leader?
2. Describe some of the internal and external pressures that Jesus withstood in
completing the ultimate service on our behalf.
In college, I attended a local church very regularly. It was where I met most of my
friends as well as my boyfriend. We would attend Sunday morning services, which was
led by a long time senior pastor, as well as Sunday evenings. The senior pastor had
been a huge leader in our church and the local community for years. He was the one
who led me to the church and to attend so regularly. He also had a tremendous backing
beyond just his church as well.
Coincidentally, our pastor's wife also happened to be an ordained minister and worked
for the Upstate’s district church office. Hundreds of students and well known community
members both old and young followed him and definitely revered him to be one of the
main pillars of our church. One Sunday, he did not show up to preach which was very
unlike him. Out of the blue it was announced that he and his wife were getting divorced.
This obviously shocked everyone at my church and stunned community members who
had thought him and his wife were an example to others as to what a happy, Christ filled
marriage looks like. Several members and their whole families left the church and his
wife moved to another part of the state and took a large following of members with her.
The senior pastor had come to a crossroads, so to speak, and had a decision on how
he was to act moving forward. He could have let the divorce get him down and affect
him and his pastoral duties and role in the church, or he could use it as a driving force to
become closer to God and his relationship with the church. Thankfully, he chose the
latter and decided to move to a new church where he could start fresh. He still comes
often to my church and was very honest and open the whole time about what had
happened and how he was going to grow from the situation. I believe that his behavior
and how he handled the divorce really made me respect him more as a leader in Christ
and also as a role model. He now would be someone I could talk to about any problems
I may have, because he is so much more relatable than the perfect figure I thought he
was before.
One of the first pressures that comes to mind about Jesus was that there were so many
people constantly saying that he was not worthy of leading anyone because he was
