Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

Douglas's story commences with whatever he knows about his birth, and in short, what he
is not aware of like he states," I have no accurate knowledge of my age," nor can he definitely
recognize his father. Douglas cannot remember when he was separated from his parents, where
he states that “the separation of mothers from children as well as lack of knowledge about
paternity and age. Douglass explains this was common amongst slaves as he claims that “this is
the wish of most masters to keep their slaves that ignorant” (p 2). The above phrases provide a
clear thesis statement about slavery that these five secondary sources will dwell its illustrations.
A young child in colonel Edward Lloyd plantation he eyes witnessed ruthless floggings of
different slaves, both males and females, young and old. However, most of his descriptions dwell
on childhood as a representative or typical narrative rather than a personal story. Douglas states
my own treatment was the same for other slave children. In his work, the early chapters dwell on
the slave's status as well as the nature of bondage over his personal experience. This work
basically emulates the life experience of slavery of the 19

and 20

centuries.
