For The Compass and Torch" I think that Baines, Elizabeth I think her purpose for
writing this story is to show how family can be broken apart by divorce. It shows how their
children want for everything to be normal but it isn't.I think that the author's audience in for
children and adults who are going through a divorece. It isnt to necessarily make them feel better
but it lets them know that it is normal and that it will be hard to deal with. By showing the child
desperately trying to get his father's attention by constantly asking him questions and the father
barely responding to what he says, only to find out that the father is worried that he's losing his
son is heartbreaking. The way the author engage my attention was how he talked about how Jim
seemed to care more about the torch then his father. Which made me think that his father didn't
care but then it surprised me in the end by telling me that he does really care about trying to bond
with him but it just isn't working. I felt that the story was logical. I believe that this does happen
to families in real life i've been through stuff like this and I know from experience that this is
true. The story was organized from specific to general. Starting of with a kid and his dad going
hiking to finding out that the father and mother have had a divource. And the kid and the dad
trying to bondolny to realize that they are growing apart.
Now for the "Lucky Charm" by Linder, Colin, I think his purpose for writing this story is to
show how a father and his son are bonding while going to Black-Eyed Petes'. I The Lucky
Charms is for children and parents, because the story is about how a child and their parent find
something that they are able to bond over. I think that parents and children will be able to relate
to this book because normally children and parents have little activities that they like to do
together that help them bond and build a stronger relationship with one another. The author

develops strong ideas by telling how tho the father can’t keep a job that he does care and try to
help his wife pay for the house. It shows us that he isn't just some deadbeet that gambles all the
time. Like telling how he kept trying to get jobs but getting fired because of him being too nice
to sell a nice old lady a piece of junk. The author engaged my atencion by completely
squandering my beliefs on what was going to happen in the story. I thought that the dad having a
gambling addiction ment that he was bad dad and a bad husband. But I was wrong about the
story showed he was a good dad and he was a good husband, he just wasn’t a good provider
because he couldn't keep a steady job for more than a month. I do see the logic in this story I
believe that things like this do happen in real life. Where a father can't keep but he does try for
his family and does try to bond with his son. I think that this story is from general to specific
because we start of with we start of with a dad that gambles and can’t find a job then we start to
learn more about him.
Lastly for the "Cricket War" by Thurber, Bob I think his purpose for writing this story is to
show a crazy story about how a father accidentally burned the house down. I think the audience
the author is going for are children.Because it’s just a funny little story about how a father
accidentally burned down his house while trying to kill crickets.I think that kids will really like
this story. Some strong ideas I found this story are how they kept building and building up the
cricket situation. First the father didn't really care about how much the crickets then slowly but
surely it started to become a big problem. With the mom threatening to leave so the dad had went
down into the cellar to poison the crickets, then they keep finding dead crickets around the house.
Then more and more crickets keep coming and the dad keeps trying to poison and burn them
