Utilitarianism

The ethical theory of Utilitarianism principle is based on the concept that every action of

an individual can hold some good within the event. The theory also depicts that the level of

happiness an action holds to an individual is the variation existing between the quantity of pleasure

it brings and the pain caused. By essentially assessing the profits against the hazards, thus an

individual can define whether the action is good or bad. The main important reason for encouraging

the utilitarianism ethical theory is that the theory is useful within our society. Various institutions

within our society i.e professionals, industries, and special interest groups such as business firms

and government, are experiencing numerous ethical decisions (Bentham). These ethical decisions

tend to be complicated and challenging, require deep thoughts, and lastly, proper resolution.

The ethical concerns that ascend in these situations are essential to the effective operation

of the theory within our societies. Thus, individual needs a much more relative upfront means of

making effective decision i.e., differentiating the right action from the bad. Every individual in the

globe aspires to be happy within the society. Therefore, in this essay, I will offer several critics

illustrating how utilitarianism theory enhances happiness within our society.

In the beginning, I decided to spent my entire time with my family members exchanging

tends to explain the concept of consequentialism as brought out in the utilitarianism theory. I

decided to stay home not out of love for the entire family but for the reason that I can be an

excellent illustration for others to trail, thus improving the entire society. An individual is looking

to the consequence of an action before acting is not honest since she or he does not make their

decision from deep their heart. Hence, it makes the principle of consequentialism to be immoral

and inhuman. “We may refer (the question of happiness) to the love of liberty and personal

independence… but its most appropriate appellation is a sense of dignity” (Warnock. p.260).

.Another instance occurred when I decided to purchase a car for my sister to assist her in

getting back and forth from the job. Since my sister can now go to work efficiently, she can accept

the work offer at DC firm since the company had being having a hard time filling the position due

to its importance. The firm can effectively handle now vital decisions on the business. I intended

to make my sister happy, but she acted in a way that wholly benefited the company. As quoted,

“happiness, or care for others” (p.287), is “the ethical standard” (Warnock, p.284). An act of

utilitarianism can make someone happy, thus good choices that benefit a large population.

I donated food to the vulnerable poor people within the society. I did this as an act of

generosity to assist the poor to boost their happiness level despite their condition. As stated by

Mill in his critic towards utilitarianism theory, he raises a duty to improve the condition of life of

humans to eradicate poverty and diseases. The act of liberation of human distress is a responsibility

of “a long succession of generations” long-lasting into the imminent (Warnock p.266). He also

argues that “we act in the public interest”, to promote an excellent society (Warnock p.269).

Another entry occurred when I visited Jovi Hospital to show kindness to mentally ill

people. This was an act of love to have the affected people feel happy and relieve them of pain. As
