Every era in American history has had notable men and women who shaped their times, for better or worse. Identify
one person from this week’s reading who you believe had a significant impact on the years from 1945 to 1974. This
could include a president who introduced important policies that changed the country, a social activist who inspired
reform, or someone else who had an important positive or negative impact on this era. Briefly explain who this person
was, their specific “individual influence” on the times, and then discuss why you made your selection.
Your initial post should be at least 150 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s)
and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts
by Day 7. In your response to your classmates, comment on their selection of individial. Also, compare and contrast
to your own selection.
One notable man who had signicant inuence, especially in the years from 1953 to 1961 was President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
According to biographer Stephen Ambrose, he was a “leader who made peace in Korea and kept the peace together, a
statesman who safely guided the free world through one of the most dangerous decades of the Cold War, and a poli*cian who
captured and kept the condence of the American people” (1990). President Eisenhower was so concerned about policies, and
the demand on him to protect the country, that he su/ered from ill health and had anxiety issues. Although he had expressed
concern over the decision by the Supreme Court to try and force desegrega*on in southern states, when the Arkansas governor
used the Arkansas Na*onal Guard to block the rst black students from a4ending the Central High School, President Eisenhower
sent in troops to allow the students to a4end, forcing desegrega*on (Bowles, 2011).
I chose President Eisenhower as one of the most inuen*al people during this *me period because of his ability to get the
country as a whole through such trying *mes. While the anxiety and pressure from the important job that he held did get to
him as far as his health, he managed to get the country through these *mes with such a grace, and in such a way that society
s*ll loved him. The American people relied on him at such a pivotal moment in history, and he got our country through it all
safely. He was indeed one of our greatest presidents.
