NURSING CARE OF GERIATRIC PATIENTS 2
Abstract
Nursing care plays a crucial or critical role when dealing with geriatric patients suffering
from dementia. The reasons for this is that the disease does not have a known cure and if not
treated properly, the patients will highly likely undergo a rapid progression from stage 1 to 7 of
the condition. Optimal nursing care involves three factors: knowledge of detection, diagnosis and
the best treatment practices for patients who are at different stages of the disease. The second
factor is the communication skills or strategies that nurses will employ. Nurses should be well
versed in using both verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to interact with their
patients. They should also be able to identify the cues that will entice an individual to
communicate and also interpret the behaviors of a patient especially when he or she is not
responding to the nurses. Thirdly, the level of empathy affects the type of care nurses provide to
their patients. Nurses who are compassionate are committed to providing patients with the right
type of care. However, it is advised that nurses should not invest highly when dealing with these
patients as it can result to burnout and work stress. Nurses who are well versed in these areas are
able to provide optimal care to their patients.
