Introduction
Coca-Cola Company is the world’s largest beverage company with approximately 500
brands. It is an American corporation, manufacturer, and marketer of different non-alcoholic
beverage concentrates and syrups such as Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and other products. The
company produces a syrup concentrate that is later sold to different bottlers in various parts of
the world. The company is ranked number 1 globally in terms of production of what is
considered as sparkling beverages, juices, ready-to-drink teas, and coffee. It also has the world’s
largest beverage distribution systems as it covers more than 200 countries. According to Statista
(2017), the Coca-Cola brand was valued at $78.14 billion. The company’s mission is to refresh
the world, inspire moments of optimism and happiness and create value, and one of its vision is
to be a great place to work whereby people are inspired to be the best version of themselves. In
this paper, it assesses a positive and negative aspect of the company. A conclusion will then be
provided to determine whether the company has had a positive impact in the society.
A case for Coca-Cola Company: Community Development Initiatives in Different Parts of
Africa
According to Muhtar Kent the Chairman and former CEO of the Coca-Cola Company,
while billions of people are unable to access clean water for drinking and other domestic
purposes, the effect is felt more by women and young girls (Hower 2013, 1). These sentiments
are supported by a report that was released by the UN Women (2014), which stated that African
women and children spend approximately 40 billion hours collecting water each year (UN
Women 2014, 1). If they had access to clean water then this time would have been used for other
purposes such as learning (for children), working and taking care of their families (for women).
