Chapter 13: Critical Thinking
Short Answer
Complete this teacher-graded assignment. Submit your work to your teacher by the due date for full
credit.
Total score: ____ of 10 points
1. What do you believe are the three most important priorities for dealing with the water resource
problems of the Colorado River basin, as discussed in the Core Case Study that opens this
chapter? Explain your choices.
Answer:
To me, the most important priorities for dealing with the water resource problems of the
Colorado River basin are the inefficient water use, climate change, and water pollution. A large
amount of water is wasted on the way sending to other states, which is the major cause of the
problem. A climate change resulting from the lack of water hastens the situation. Water
pollution, which is another result of removing large amount of water, is threatening the
biodiversity in that area and may lead to serious consequences.
2. List three ways in which human activities are affecting the water cycle. How might these changes
to the water cycle affect your lifestyle? How might your lifestyle be contributing to these effects?
Answer:
Humans can pollute water, withdraw too much water, and use water inefficiently. The removal
and polluting of water may change the climate and prevent the water cycle from happening
naturally. Honestly, most of us use much more water than we necessarily need. My lifestyle,
under this consideration, is not sustainable and has negative effects on water cycle.
3. Explain how our current use of the earth’s water resources can be viewed as a good example of
the tragedy of the commons (see Chapter 1).
Answer:
This is a good example of the tragedy of the commons because a large amount of water is shared
by a large population, individuals usually view their effect too little on the total water supply. To
most of us, individual action cannot make a big difference of the entire water supply, therefore
underestimating the effect of their actions.
4. What role does population growth play in water supply problems? Relate this to water supply
problems of the Colorado River basin (Core Case Study).
Answer:
Population growth increases the demand of freshwater. This requires more projects to transport
water to populated dry areas and causes more water loss. Also, more population leads to more
pollution and thus cause biodiversity loss. This connects with the Colorado River Basin because
the basin has been experiencing a drought, and the more people it needs to supply, the less water
it will have.
5. Explain why you are for or against
