Bundling
From our previous class discussion, I will define bundling as combining goods of
different flows and transporting them in one shared transportation vessel such as a truck, a
container, or even a pallet during part of their to the intended destinations (Haralambides &
Acciaro, 2010). Therefore, through this process of bundling, there appear to be advantages which
are; bundling leads to proper space utilization. Adequate space utilization is attained by the fact
that bundling makes it possible to fill a transportation vessel with goods moving to different
destinations but passing through a common area. When the goods arrive at the common area,
they are offloaded and bundled together with other goods following a common route to the final
intended place.
Additionally, it shows that bundling makes it possible to utilize the space available in a
transportation container at any given period. Cases of having half-empty trucks and containers or
long waiting periods at the port are addressed through bundling. More so, bundling leads to a
cheaper cost of transportation for shippers. Various shippers will fill a container and share the
cost of transportation (Chiambaretto & Dumez, 2012). Therefore, it becomes cheaper for the
shippers because they avoid spending much money in their space in a transportation vessel or
container.
Beside, bundling having some advantages during this process also, some disadvantages
accrue. One of the disadvantages is that bundling increases the level of managing cargo at
intermediate terminals. In the course of transportation, more labor and time will be spent in
exchange for loads between trucks, trains, or barges as they change course to the specific
