Nothing Left to Lose
This response is to a snippet to Randy Pausch’s speech on the television show, Oprah. In
his lecture, he posed us with the question, if you had one day left to live, what would your last
lecture be on? I think I would speak about my experiences in life and what lessons I took from it.
I would want to pass on my knowledge, like those before me, to leave my mark on future
generations. I think there is some solace in the belief that a piece of you is carried on to the next
generation or beyond.
I would make examples of my passion for my hobbies. Though you don’t have to have
the same interests as me, find something that will allow you to escape. Some people like to be
buried in the stories of books and film. Others like to build models or dance. I personally enjoy
playing basketball. It is one of those things that I can do without worrying about anything else
going on in the outside world. It is my little escape. Though there are plenty of problems and
situations that can occur on the court, everything is left on the court. Once the game is over, I
make peace with everything that happened during the game.
Another bit of advice I would pass on is, don’t carry baggage. This is kind of a complex
but simple statement. I am not saying be completely disassociated with everything and everyone,
but know the limits of your grief and anger. Don’t let bitterness consume you and be willing to
