Topic: Is euthanasia/assisted-suicide right or wrong?
Rehm, Diane. “Let Dying People End Their Suffering.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 7 June
2018, www.nytimes.com/2018/06/07/opinion/california-end-of-life-aid-in-dying.html.
The following opinion piece was written by Diane Rehm. She spoke of her experience of
with her friend and husband who were both diagnosed with terminal illnesses. First, she
spoke of her friend, who found solace in the fact that she had the option for assisted-
suicide and how that option was taken away from her. Then, she spoke of her previous
situation with her husband, and how he did not have the option and what he had to go
through to end his misery.
I believe that the writer’s experience in this helps you understand her stand point from
a friend or loved one’s perspective. She spoke of the issues that was ailing her friend
and husband and walks you through the enduring problems they go through. Even
though this is an opinion piece, she includes facts that are linked within the column.
I will using this as an emotional source from a person who has lived through this
scenario multiple times. Her experience in the situation gives her firsthand knowledge of
how someone has to deal with this situation.
Pereira, J. “Legalizing Euthanasia or Assisted Suicide: the Illusion of Safeguards and Controls.” Advances

details on why each safeguard comes up short are has a bad loophole. The reason for

this is to prevent the ever snowballing effect that euthanasia was becoming more of a
convenience for those living than those who needed it because their quality of life was
over.
The writer’s article is very well written and they expressed their information very clearly
with facts and statistics. They also bring up arguments for ethical debates in this. This
article also brings up assisted suicide for children and how it is handled. They also
provide a response to deal with some issues on how a person who wants to end their
life, may be convinced not to end it.
This is a good source material for facts involving the euthanasia and assisted-suicide
laws passed in other countries. It also will be a good source of facts that address the
issues of arguments for assisted-suicide and euthanasia. I hope to show that the options
given are just not good enough to cover major loop holes in the current laws for this
issue.
