Introduction
Electronic Health Records, also known as EHR’s and formally known as electronic
medical records, are digital versions of patient charts. They allow for real time charting, are
accessible from anywhere, and provide access to evidence-based tools and software that can aid
in clinical decision making. I selected this technology topic because it is something so widely
used in healthcare today, though it is still relatively recent as a replacement for traditional patient
charts. It is of interest to me because I use EHR’s every day. I find that I rely heavily on them
when working with an interdisciplinary team and I also have an expectation that they ensure
patient safety. To find my sources, I used the databases CINAHL, PubMed, and Google Scholar.
I used a combination of the search terms “Electronic Health Records, patient care, advantages,
and patient safety”. I also filtered results to show peer-reviewed sources published between 2015
and 2020.

documentation. Nurse champions were then selected and trained to continue auditing, and
to attend workshops focused on documentation techniques. A year later, these workshops
