Reflective Writing 2: the Death Penalty When the United States of America was formed after the colonies won its freedom from Britain in 1783, George Washington became president and partnered with James Madison to create and ratify the first ten amendments of the Constitution known as the Bill of Rights. These amendments were created to protect the rights of those who feared that the government and its officials would become too powerful and abuse their authority. One of such rights is the protection from cruel and unusual punishment in the eighth amendment (​Ushistory.org​). In my educated opinion, I believe that capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, violates the eighth amendment and qualifies as a cruel punishment, as well as an abuse of power by the government, and should be abolished nationwide. Prior to watching ​Death By Fire,​ I was already opposed to the use of the death penalty. From watching the movie, my feelings against it became stronger as it is proof that these convictions can be and are often discredited with newfound evidence and reversed testimonies later on, when it is too late to reverse the punishment.
