Summary of the disaster
For the purpose of this week’s discussion, my initial post will focus on Hurricane Maria.
This was categorized as a category 5 type of hurricane which hit the area of Puerto Rico. From a
public health perspective, the total death toll of this natural disaster was estimated at
approximately 3,059 individuals and the financial damage exceeded 91 billion of dollars. The
consequences of this were catastrophic as most of the citizens lost their homes, the vegetation of
the island was eradicated and many of the primary cities were flooded. In the upcoming
paragraphs, I am going to approach Hurricane Maria from a public health perspective
(Diaz,2018).
Common Public Health Risks
Considering the flooding of the cities, the primary public health concern was regarding
waterborne pathologies. The waters were contaminated with E. Coli, typhoid, and leptospirosis,
putting the entire community at risk. In addition, the wet environment also stimulated mosquito
borne viruses such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya, all of which were present in the area of
Puerto Rico. Nevertheless, the community was isolated from any accessible source of both food
and also water, which increased their risk of malnutrition (Arzola,2018).
Potential Long-term Risks
In the long term, access to medical care was drastically altered. Many severely ill patients
were no longer receiving their treatments and weren't able to schedule new appointments for the
regular checkups with their physicians. In addition, considering the high risk of contamination
with leptospirosis, people were not able to receive treatment against this pathogen from their
