The future
For many centuries the human condition has been evolving, and as a species, we have continued
to do terrible things to others and the world as a whole. Through brute power, individuals have
dictated our behavior as humans, which in turn has placed certain individuals in society as weak
while others are elevated as powerful. One of the barbarous acts we have done as humans is
dehumanizing women in different parts of our world. In Rabindranath Tagore’s “Punishment,”
he presents the dehumanization of women and demonstrates how women are breaking the chains
of slavery to bring a future for themselves where they are treated as equals or worthy of the title
humans.
We cannot sit back and relax when there is no future for women in our society. For Tagore, he
paints a crystal clear picture of the struggles of women in society. In the story, women are under
the oppressive rule of their husbands and perceived weak roles in society, and that is why
Chandara’s husband Chidam says that if she loses her wife he can get another, but if his brother
is hanged he cannot get a replacement (Tagore 863). For women, they are treated as mere objects
that can be replaced at will. For the action of murder, the characters involved have to face
punishment, but in this case, the punishment is influenced by the extreme state of poverty instead
of malice. The situation becomes more critical when death is presented to women as an
alternative to life under the defined rules of the men or their husbands. All actions that Chandara
takes represents a call or a push against the oppression that has lasted for a long time in society

although it was going to cost her life she was willing to take the fight head on. The future that
Chandara envisions is one where women have independence and courage even to take what is
thrown at them, for instance, when she broadly stated, “I killed her” (Tagore 865). For Chandara,
she is confident that one day women will have a voice in society, and this is what will give them
their own power.
On the other hand, Lao She highlights the striking contrast between a traditional society and a
modern society in an ever-evolving and competitive time. The story by She follows the life of a
young man Xin Dezhi who witnessed change fast hand in his position as a senior apprentice of
operations at the Fortune Silk Store. The changes that Xin witnesses include the change from the
honest manager of the company Qian, to the struggling manager Zhou and later back to Qian.
From witnessing the changes, Xin is able to make a conclusion about the fate of the store. Even
though there are constant changes at the store, Xin accepts some of the changes from the
traditional way of doing things to the new way of doing things. For Xian, he cherishes the good
old days of the store, but fate soon intervenes, and the store can no longer escape it. According to
Xin, the future that he envisions is where the store will not have a place because he observes that
in order for it to make money, it has to be “a combination of burlesque comedian and
combination magician” (433). For Xin, he clearly understands that the past cannot be recovered
and so the future of the store in the modern times is one that is shattered in bits and pieces.
The future is always uncertain for us humans, but we always try our best to think ahead. In
Yates, “When you are old,” the speaker asks the audience to envision a future when they are old,
and as the addressee, they will be unwilling to return the love that the speaker has for even. From
what the addressee envisions is a future where love is gone, and everything has changed
