Now go online and find pairs of species in marine ecosystems that illustrate of each of these
types of symbiosis: mutualism, commensalism, parasitism. Name the two interacting species and
tell how each one is affected (i.e., benefits, no effect, or harmed). For each species pair, cite at
least one webpage as a reference.
a) Mutualism An example of mutualism is Clown Fish and sea anemone. The clown fish
benefits from the anemone as it provides shelter, protection and a hiding place. The clown fish
benefits the anemone due to the food scraps and waste it produces for the anemone to feed on.

b) Commensalism An example of commensalism is Whales and Barnacles. Barnacles are filter
feeders and benefit from being transported around by attached to the whale. This enables
barnacles to feed on plankton as it travels through water white remaining untouched by
predators. The whale isn’t effected at all.

c) Parasitism An example of parasitism are crabs and parasitic barnacles called
Rhizocephalans. These parasitic barnacles harm male crabs specifically by destroying their
reproductive genitals and creating external sacs that look like crab eggs, forcing the male crab to
care for the parasitic eggs as if it was a female.
