PSY 510 SPSS Assignment 1
Questions:
1) Describe a research question in psychology that interests you. Also, state a hypothesis for an
experiment related to your research question.
Type your answer below: Does sleep duration influence the eating behaviors of online graduate
students? I want to know whether students who sleep less tend to eat more unhealthy foods than
students who get enough sleep.
I hypothesize that graduate students who report themselves as short sleepers will be more likely to be
stress eaters than those who have normal sleep habits.
2) How might you test your hypothesis? Briefly describe the procedure you would use, and be sure to
clearly discuss the independent variable(s) and dependent variable(s).
Type your answer below:
Procedure:
I will test my hypothesis by administering an online survey to my SNHU Online peers. It will be a
questionnaire on the eating and sleeping habits of each student as well as their stress levels. The
questionnaire will ask how long a person sleeps per night on average. It will also ask questions about
their eating habits, more specifically the frequency of unhealthy foods eaten per day. In addition, it will
also ask about their stress levels using a rating scale. Sleep duration is the independent variable and
eating frequency and stress levels are the dependent variables. The eating habits of short sleepers (<8
hours per night) will be compared to normal sleepers (>8 hours per night). I will also look at which
group (short sleepers or short sleeper) reports higher levels of stress.
3a) In SPSS, enter hypothetical data for at least 15 participants. To do this, you will first need to create
the variables in the “Variable View.” You will then need to enter the data in the “Data View. When
entering your hypothetical data, be sure to:
Name each variable
Use a label to provide more detail about each variable
Enter values for your variable conditions if necessary
Your data file will be submitted along with this worksheet.
3b) Provide an explanation for each of your variables. More specifically, which variable is the IV, and
which is the DV? How would the variables be measured? How should the values be interpreted?
Type your answer below:
IV: Sleep duration-average amount of sleep in hours per 24-hour period.
DV: Eating frequency-frequency of unhealthy food (i.e. junk food) eaten per day.
DV: Stress Level-the level of stress reported on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being high stress levels.
