Introduction
Healthcare is always changing, and it is important to change with it. The processes that used to work in the
past need to evolve, to ensure that patients are given the care that they deserve and demand. Ensuring that all
levels of healthcare communicate with each other is important to reach a common goal.
Concept of Systems Thinking
A Level 1 Heading is centered, boldface, and upper/lower case
Systems Thinking is a way of making decisions by thinking of everything as a whole. It is looking at each
system and seeing how they Pronoun –antecedent agreement error
work together or how one effects the other for the overall end goal. Systems Thinking is like a puzzle with many
different pieces and when you put those pieces together you see the whole picture. You will not be able to see the
whole picture if you only look at one piece of the puzzle. Good definition
Difference Between Systems Thinking and Silo Thinking
A Level 1 Heading is centered, boldface, and upper/lower case
As discussed above, Systems Thinking is putting all the pieces together to see the bigger and whole picture.
Silo Thinking would be the opposite. Silo Thinking is each system working independently and not allowing one part
to communicate with the other. Systems Thinking is teamwork and working together for the common goal. Silo
Thinking is each person working on their Pronoun –antecedent agreement error
own with no interaction with another, even though they all work in the same location….good definition…
Applying Systems Thinking in My Work Environment
A Level 1 Heading is centered, boldface, and upper/lower case
Working in a hospital system I can use Systems Thinking in my day to day operations. One of my goals for
the year is to increase patient satisfaction and I know that to get to this goal I need to look at each patient’s
interaction and see how they interact with each other. I will look at front desk etiquette and see how friendly the staff
is on the phone and when checking in a patient. How long is a patient on hold to speak to someone? How long does
it take to make an appointment? When checking in, are they acknowledged right away and how long does it take to
let the clinical staff know when the patient is ready? Then it’s looking at how long does a patient wait in the waiting
before clinical staff call them to a room. Is the nurse friendly and knowledgeable? How long does it take for the
physician to get into the room? Is the physician friendly and does the physician take his/ her time to ensure the
patient’s questions are answered? How is the check out process and how easy is it to get the paperwork the patient
needs and schedule a follow-up appointment? After looking at all these things, I will have to see what staff members
need more training and how to get them the training they need. As you can see, each group of people are service
the patient differently, but the patient looks at these interactions as their whole experience. Good approach…you’ll
certainly improve your HCAHP scores…
