EKG AND THE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTING SYSTEM Electrical Conducting System ▪Specialized cardiac muscle cells that can generate action potentials ▪SA node: located in the right atrium (pacemaker) It sends out action potentials at the fastest rate. ▪Impulses are sent from the SA node across both atria. ▪The AV node is the place where the impulse passes from the atria to the ventricles. Electrical Conducting System (cont.) ▪From the AV-node the action potential travels along the bundle of HIS through the right and left bundle branches (located in the interventricular septum) to the Purkinje fibers. SA node → atria → AV node → bundle of HIS → bundle branches → Purkinje fibers Fibrous connective tissue ▪Located between atria and ventricles ▪The AV node is the only place where the action potential can pass from the atria to the ventricles. ▪The AV node delays the action potential from the SA node for a fraction of a second, allowing the atria to contract while the impulse is delayed in the AV node. ▪The delay allows the atria to contract before the ventricles. Action potential ▪The action potential has two phases that will be seen in the EKG. ▪Depolarization: influx of Na+ into the cell In heart muscle depolarization is maintained for a longer time through an influx of calcium. ▪Repolarization: K+ leaves the cell ▪These two “waves” of electrical charges will be seen in the EKG. SA Node ▪The resting membrane potential is not maintained ...
