HILDEGARD DISCUSSION 2
Hildegard Discussion
Born in Germany in 1098, Hildegard von Bingen emerged as one of the extraordinarily
gifted and visionary women whose devotion made it possible for future generation women to be
successful in various fields. According to Lerman (1998) from a very tender age, Hildegard
claimed to have prophetic abilities and supernatural visions which she did not manifest until later
years. Although Hildegard lacked formal education, this did not stop her from making significant
and memorable contributions to the church and the society as well. With no formal education,
Hildegard wish to have her visions and ideas published did not stop. She believed that by
publishing her ideas, she would reach and impact many people. Using secretaries, she achieved
this wish and had her ideas put down on books. Her ideas covered several areas including
philosophy, the natural world and herbal medicine (Lerman, 1998). In the church, Hildegard
emerged as a prominent leader and a symbol of authority. Here, she developed several visionary
paintings and had her secretaries help in producing illustrations. These paintings that were done
in mandala-forms were strong in providing cosmic memories. Hildegard is also known as one of
the earliest music composers in history. The music he compared differs from other types of
compositions because of her unique melodies. Finally, Lerman (1998) identifies that Hildegard
was an exceptional leader who encouraged the participation of women in leadership the growth
of women. Her contributions were effective in motivating other women to be successful in
various fields. Her publications and leadership in a system that was male-dominated motivated
other nuns to work and follow their paths with courage. Her efforts to encourage women in the
patriarchal church is evident by the kind of freedoms she granted nuns who worked under her.
Nuns, who served under her, enjoyed a high level of freedom that was not common during those
times. For instance, they were allowed to leave their long hair uncovered.
