a. Moisture in the sodium carbonate would lead to less sodium carbonate present, less
actual NaCl recovered and a lower % yield
b. Measuring of warm crucible + lid instead of cool crucible + lid will lead to lower mass
crucible + lid, higher mass sodium carbonate, higher theoretical yield and lower % yield
c. Spattering during the reaction or cooling will cause loss of NaCl, lower actual yield of
NaCl and lower % yield
d. Impurities of NaCl in the sodium carbonate are common. These will lead to lower actual
and lower % yield.
