Cognitive-Experiential Self-Theory (CEST)
Under the Cognitive-Experiential Self-Theory (CEST), the adaptive unconscious is
replaced with the Freudian maladaptive unconscious. The process is triggered by an automatic
learning system based on the experiences that people share with other animals occupying a
higher order. According to Cervone & Pervin (2019), the experiential system operates in a
parallel, simultaneous, sequential and bidirectional interaction (Beck, 2019). While the two
systems often work in harmony, there are rare incidents when they conflict hence causing people
to respond irrationally to interpersonal and inter-societal interrelationship problems.
The CEST can be used to explain Mrs. C’s symptoms described in the case. According to
the theory, people develop implicit theories of reality about self and others or inanimate objects
which automatically provide direction for their everyday behavior (Prochaska & Norcross,
2018). Mrs. C’s interactions and experiences as a child under the care of her parents could
explain her current obsessive tendencies. He father was controlling requiring her to narrate every
detail of her dating experience as a teenager (Cervone & Pervin, 2019). In addition, her mother is
described as a cold, compulsive and obsessive about her disgust around sex. These experiences
according to CEST may have created a maladaptive consciousness that explains Mrs. C’s
symptoms. Mrs. C’s mother also obsessed over cleanliness, an area that she struggles with
currently.
One of the interventions that can be applied to Mrs. C’s case is reconstruction of realities
about self and others. It is important for the patients to process the maladaptive beliefs buried in
her subconscious. This will trigger a process of recreating her reality about self as well as
