My Education Philosophy
As a Science and Math educator I have had the opportunity to try out a lot of
different things in order to determine what best engages students. I have found that a
variety of instructional, classroom management, and assessment strategies should be used
to create the best possible learning environment for students. I think that most educators
would agree with this statement; we obviously want to showcase how we teach in
multiple ways so that it gives students of different learning backgrounds a different way
to learn.
Throughout my internship experiences the things that I believed in as an educator
were put to the test in a much more practical way than in an Education Core Studies
class. I got to test out a variety of instructional, classroom management, and assessment
strategiessome of which worked, while others needed to be tweaked and adjusted. I am
a firm believer in hands-on learning. This was not only incorporated in the Physics and
Junior Science classes I taught, but also in my Math classes. I created activities and
projects that got the students using concepts that they had learned to conduct hands-on,
practical applications. I also used hands-on activities as a way of learning a new concept.
This brought in the idea of inquiry-based learning and its different levels. At the start of
the year I started my classes off with some guided inquiry activities, and then as the
semester went on I gradually became less guided and tried to get the students to come to
conclusions either on their own or in collaborative groups. I have always been a
proponent of using hands-on and inquiry-based learning in Science classes, but I
discovered that these methods should also be used in Math classes. Creating hands-on
and inquiry-based activities to either reinforce or introduce a topic allowed my Math
students to see the practical side of Math. The question of “when am I ever going to use
this in real life” came up less and less in my Math classes when I incorporated these
methods. I was fortunate enough to be able to use a lot of different forms of technology in
my lessons, also. In my Science classes I used motion sensors, graphing software, online
simulations, videos, force meters, etc. I also found that some of the best technologies in a
classroom are low-tech. I used mini whiteboards on a daily basis in my Science classes;
they allowed for students to work together in groups and make mistakes without having
them in ink. I learned that teaching does involve some direct instruction, but even with
direct instruction you can make it more engaging using demonstrations and questioning.
By creating a classroom environment in which students were comfortable to ask or
answer questions, it allowed for more growth in learning for both the students and
myself.
For my beliefs on classroom management, it is very much so dependent on the
class that I am teaching, but there are a few general things that I will do in all of my
classes. Throughout the first week or month of classes we drill through the classroom
expectations, policies, and rules. If the class seems responsible and mature enough to
handle it, I like to get my students involved in the process of making classroom rules and
policies—this doesn’t work for all classes, though. Throughout internship I learned what
it means to be fair to my students. I very much so base my classroom management on
respect, and the fact that it needs to be earned on both ends of the classroom spectrum.
Respect isn’t the easiest thing to earn at times, but it helps to be involved in the school
programs and extracurricular activitiesto get to know the students in your school on
