The Place of Motivation in the Workplace
Motivation is an essential dimension of organizational behavior because it affects
multiple elements of human resources. Motivation denotes the forces within an individual
that determine the level and direction of effort expended at work (Uhl-Bien, Schermerhorn, &
Osborn, 2014). It affects employees' will to contribute to organizational goals, the degree to
which resources are utilized, turnover rates, and both the rate and quality of HR output. For
example, when employees are motivated, they are likely to improve the quality of output,
reduce absenteeism, and focus on efforts necessary to achieve set performance goals. It is for
this reason that motivation theories remain imperative to human resources and management.
Notably, researchers showing interest in organizational behavior have probed the topic of
motivation, with most of them offering insightful perspectives on how organizations should
approach performance policies in the workplace. Researchers in this field have distinguished
various sources of motivation that either culminate in negative or positive outcomes for
workers. With this regard, both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation are crucial sources of
motivation with significant ramifications for the modern workplace. This study enquires on
motivational theories deemed to be relevant in contemporary organizations. The review of
theories of motivation is necessary to assess this question and give insights into approaches
that organizations require to improve employees' performance. Although contemporary
organizations use a range of methods to encourage performance, one size fits all approach to
employee motivation is misinformed because successful managers apply a combination of
theories based on the workplace factors and employees' needs.
Literature Review
Regardless of size, organizations strive to better their performance and create positive
connections with employees in a bid to improve their performance. Importantly, workers
