Community-Based Corrections Programs
Community corrections is a term used to refer to correction programs that oversee the
offenders in the community rather than in prisons. Community corrections are perceived to
have more positive and helpful outcomes and images compared to institutional corrections.
Since the 1960s, community-based correction programs have become more common in the
U.S. Community corrections are always managed by courts and agencies with legal authority
to made needed decisions (Latessa & Lovins, 2019). The primary role of community
correction programs and community corrections personnel's main objective is to promote
rehabilitation for the clients and ensure safety and security for the community. Community
correction personnel apply different options of community correction programs, including
parole, probation, halfway houses, work release centers, and other sanctions like electronic
monitoring as either a probation condition or a sentence.
Probation in criminal justice refers to the act of releasing an offender from jail subject
to a period of good behavior supervised by a probation officer. An offender released on
probation is expected by the court to follow certain conditions set forth by the court and face
a threat of incarceration if any set conditions are violated. The probation officers are
responsible for making recommendations to judges about the offender's qualification for
probation and deciding when to file the violation reports. Parole is defined as the conditional
release of a prison inmate on the promise of good behavior. Parolees continue to serve time
even after being released from prison and are assigned parole officers to ensure that they
abide by their parole conditions.
Halfway houses are a type of community corrections program in the form of
residential treatment facilities for offenders. Offenders commute to work from the residential
treatment facilities, and the supervisors or counselors on staff always supervise their
