PATIENT INTERVIEW 2
When conducting a physical assessment on patients, it is important that nurses take note
of their mental and emotional state as well. This is because their physical health may be
contributed by situations that affect their mental well-being. The various aspects of physical
assessment include inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation (Wolters Kluwer Health
Inc., 2019).
The patient in question is a 27-year-old woman who is to be admitted to a work-up of
weight loss. There are several issues that are discovered while conducting an admission
interview. She reveals that she had lost her job and that her family has a history of depression
and even suicide. I would construct my interview around these two issues by probing her to talk
about her instances of depression. By doing this, I would be trying to discover if her depression
contributed to her unhealthy eating.
I would go ahead and ask her if she has any close friends or family members who she can
talk to. This is a way of further assessing why she ended up amassing so much weight. Having
someone to talk to is usually important for people who feel depressed. Even if the patient does
not like to open up to people so much, having someone around may be comforting to her. I will
also ask her if she has had any suicidal thoughts, even if for a short time. I will also ask her what
motivated her to seek medical interventions.
If I discover that the patient’s mental and emotional health may have a link to her current
physical health, I will refer her to a psychologist. This is because she may get better by receiving
guidelines from a professional concerning how to cope with stressful situations.
