MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS FOR EMPLOYEES
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs for Employees
According to Abraham Maslow, humans are motivated to satisfy five basic needs for
performance. Psychological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization needs are
essential to all humans, and they seek to satisfy them in that hierarchical order. In organizations,
individual growth is advocated to promote the organization's objectives and achieve a higher
output. There is a need to identify employee needs at an individual level to promote job satisfaction
(Jerome, 2013). Living Social escapes company managers worked to identify and satisfy these
needs for employees to ensure they performed better, and the organization grew.
According to Mya, Urban Escapes' founder, she felt the need to work in an environment
where she could feel satisfied and pursue what her heart desired and hoped to create such an
environment for other people. With the first step being the need to satisfy psychological needs,
Mya and Bram created a space where employees wanted to work because they wanted to, and they
were excited about it. This way, they would work out of their own volition and give their best
when performing a role. According to the company's directors, making mistakes is a learning
opportunity. Employees have an assurance that if they take on a venture, and it does not work out,
the repercussions will not be severe. There is no risk of job loss or threats from top management,
encouraging employees from satellite cities to take up tasks hence promoting the business.
Top management's decision to give employees equity in the business acted as motivation
since now, on top of the employees working just because they enjoyed, they now had the chance
to own a company they were working to help grow. With the success of the company, they had
something tangible to attach their efforts and success.
