Self-Awareness and Identity: Defining Myself Through My Lenses
Have you ever sat to think, I mean really think about what defines you? When I posed
this question to myself at first, the first thing that came to mind was my physical appearance and
achievements in life. However, I came to realize that there is more that defines me as just the
physical aspect. My parents were keen to teach me about the principles of rights and wrongs,
something that has stuck to me to this moment. I was always taught to do the right thing and treat
everyone with generosity, fairness, and honesty. These early life experiences have consequently
shaped the person I am and, most importantly, have come to define me. The ability to define
oneself is essential in life as it creates self-awareness, which can positively influence our
achievements and beneficial.
One thing that I pondered over myself before writing this essay was the importance of
our past in how we define ourselves. Despite the common saying of “not letting your past define
you,” I concluded that our history is crucial to how we define ourselves. Take my case, for
example, much of what I have learned about how to treat people right is influenced by my past,
namely lessons from my parents and teachers. Even to this day, before I do something or say
something, I always refer to the lessons I had from childhood to ensure that I act accordingly to
