FEMINIST CONSIOUSNESS VERSUS SOCIAL REALITY 2
Feminist Consciousness and Social Reality
Feminist consciousness is a 1960s movement that first begun in New York and rapidly
spread across the United States. The movement was inspired by the rising consciousness among
women about their role in society, what it meant to be female and gender roles. These
movements provided women with a platform to express their grievances with the prevailing
social structure and their concerns about their welfare (Ferraris and Torrengo, 2014). On the
other hand, social reality is a phenomenological concept that emanates from social interaction by
members of a community that transcends all forms of individualism. Social realities are
contingent on the existence of social acts, which vary from personal social intentional acts.
In the 1960s, gender roles placed women second place in society. While their male
counterparts built careers and provided for their families, women were seen as helpers as
discussed by Moss and Thomas (2012); this status is mainly attributed to the fact that social
reality was yet to catch up with the social reality. The civil rights movement in the 1960s
disrupted this status quo by awakening feminists to the similarities between the plight of African
Americans and their predicament. Besides, the civil rights movement also allowed women to
engage in political activity, which was fundamental to triggering feminist consciousness.
