Dante’s Inferno
Dante's Inferno is one of the most renowned pieces of literature worldwide and the most
prominent in Italy. The divine poem was written by Italian poet Dante Alighieri in the 14th
century and took him nearly twelve years. The poem highlights Dante's journey through hell in a
bid to get back to earth. He is guided by Virgil, who is an ancient Roman poet and resides in hell
for his lack of spiritual values while on earth. Alighieri describes hell as nine circles, each having
its layers in which people who committed different sins on earth are punished. Although quite
extreme, I found that many punishments in Dante's hell fit the crime. However, there were some
punishments that I didn't quite agree with.
From my analysis of this great work of literature, I found two circles whose punishments
I supported utterly. The first of these was the fifth circle, which was home to those who had been
angry on earth. In this circle, the wrathful were forced to wage war on each other in Styx's river.
Since these people were forever angry on earth, I believe that it was only right that they spent
their time in hell extremely angry and not have even one moment of calm. I also agreed with the
punishment in the outer ring of the seventh circle. This particular level was home to those who
were murders and thus on earth. Here they were forced to spend their eternity in boiling blood.
This would have served as a symbol for all the blood they may have shed while on earth, making
the punishment entirely accurate.
However, some circles in which I felt the punishments were quite extreme and in one
specific circle not fitting enough. The first level that I disagreed with was the ante-inferno. This
level was home to those who could neither side with good or evil on earth. They are punished by
having to chase a blank banner every day while hornets and worms suck on their blood. In my
opinion, being forced to chase after an empty banner daily was quite enough punishment.
