Describe the history of industrial/organizational psychology.
Industrial/organizational psychology began with Hugo Munsterberg and Walter Dill
Scott through applying psychology to the problems of organizations.
Industrial/organizational psychology began late 18 early 1900's. Job performance and
organizational efficacy was the objective (Spector, 2008). There are several different
historical events that I/O psychology was in correlation to. Frederick Winslow Taylor
an engineer whose development of Scientific Management, which has several
principles, that helps organizational practices (Spector, 2008). Throughout the years
refining old techniques helped to develop new techniques. In 1921, Penn State issued
its first Ph.D in I/O to Bruce V. Moore. The military was known to use I/O
psychology during World War I, and between the two World wars I & II, gave a boost
to the a field that organizations use today and will continue to refine and utilize.
Industrial/organization is an area of psychology that can be used in many areas. I/O
has become important for the industry and the organizations that work for the
betterment of society. The history gives I/O psychologists better perspectives and
approaches.
