HEALTH IMPROVEMENT PLAN 2
Obesity Health Improvement Plan
Health improvement in the community is a crucial aspects of population health which
nurses and healthcare organizations must focus on. One of the major issues in population health
in the United States is obesity. Obesity is a major population health problem affecting millions of
Americans and it is correlated to many other illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension. The
problem of diabetes can be solved using a healthcare and public health approach to ensure people
have access to the relevant resources and materials required for effective management of weight.
This paper presents a health improvement program targeting residents of Miami with the aim of
increasing knowledge and improving lifestyle of the population to reduce the prevalence of
obesity in the county.
Data Evaluation
Epidemiological data suggests that obesity is a major health problem affecting adults in
America. Between 2017 and 2018, the prevalence of obesity was 42.4% as compared to 30.7% in
2000 (CDC, 2020). These statistics show that the people with obesity in the United States have
increase3d significantly in the last two decades. More epidemiological data shows that young
adults have a prevalence of 40.0% while among middle-aged adults and older adults, the
prevalence is at 44.8% and 42.8% respectively (CDC, 2020). In Miami-Dade County, obesity is
at 67.5% (CDC, 2017). The epidemiological data shows that middle-aged adults have
significantly high rates of obesity compared to other age groups. Also, the occurrence of obesity
in the country affects all ages but is most common among adults in general. This data shows that
obesity affects a huge population in the country hence the need for interventions to reduce the
burden of the condition.
