There were several movement reforms in the 19
th
century, such as education, abolition of
slavery and slave trade, and women suffrage. These movements had a significant impact on the
history of the US as they opened the door for the modern democratic and professional nation.
Education movement
Horace Mann is one of the key figures in the US education reforms as he championed to
bring state-sponsored public education, including a statewide curriculum. There were few
schools in the US in the early days, and children were being taught at home by their parents
(Foner, 2016). By 1870 all states in the US had free elementary schools, and this period was
critical in US education history as it helped the country boast one of the highest literacy rates in
the century.
Abolitionist movement
The abolitionist movement was formed to fight against slavery that started before the
eruption of the civil war in the US (Foner, 2016). The leaders of the movement argued that
slavery was immoral and unfitting for a country that was considered to have freedom.
The first phase of the campaign started between the 1830s and 1870, mimicking some of
the tactics employed by the British abolitionists to end slavery in the UK.
Women suffrage movement
Before the 19
th
-century, women did not have the right to numerous practices such as
