STATIC ELECTRICITY AND ELECTROSTATIC
Abstract
The objective of carrying out this experiment was to demonstrate different methods used in
conducting static electricity and use of electroscope to demonstrate electrostatically. The
experiment clearly showed that like charges would repel while unlike charges would attract each
other.
Introduction
Electrostatic involves studying the stationary electric field or charges. Several methods may be
used to demonstrate electrostatics which includes;
a. Use of Van de Graaff generator
Van de Graaff generator normally would be used when demonstrating high voltage as a result of
static electricity. The generator would use both the pointed surface and smooth and insulator and
conductors when generating both large quantities of static charges and voltage. Millions of volts
would be generated by Van de Graaff generator. Excess charges would be expected to
accumulate around the sphere since the charges would move fast to the outer surface.
b. Use of balloons
Balloons would be used to demonstrate both electrical friction and induction. It involves rubbing
the balloon with a neutral charge to a piece of cloth or hair which is also neutral. In the process
of electrical induced friction charges would be transferred from the air or piece of cloth to the
balloon, and both the balloon and piece of cloth would have opposite charges.
c. Use of water polarization
