CLUSTER ANALYSIS 2
Week 5 Discussion: Cluster Analysis
Question 1
Data mining is a process whereby useful data is obtained from vast amounts of data.
Sequential data entails any information whereby every item in the same item set has the same
timestamp, and every transaction has a time related to it. Sequential data enables one to evaluate
and analyze the behavioral patterns and take the required steps to monitor those behaviors in a
specified period ( Tan et al., 2019). On the other hand, Sequential pattern mining is a data mining
technique used to discover patterns of particular occurrences in a dataset. Importantly, this
technique ensures that the significance of a sequence is estimated in terms of different standards.
This technique can be applied in real-life applications because the data is naturally encrypted as
successions of characters in various disciplines text analysis. The difference between
classification and clustering in data mining is that classification classifies information through
category labels while in clustering, there are no pre determined category labels. Identically,
classification is utilized in supervised learning while clustering is where some instances are
grouped depending on the identity of their properties.
Question 2
Consider the mean off a cluster of objects from a binary transaction data set.
For a collection of T transactions, the mean of the cluster component x
i
can be written as.
