ALICE IN WONDERLAND 2
Alice in Wonderland
The movie chosen from this paper is Alice in Wonderland. This film revolves around
Alice, who has still not gotten over his father's death. In a twist of fate, after a proposal by the
father's former business associate’s son, Alice finds herself having followed a rabbit and
getting into Wonderland (Underland) - a place where she only visited in her dreams as a
young girl. This paper looks at the communication elements present in various scenes of the
film.
One of the evident communication elements here from the given list is culture.
Culture refers to the norms, values shared by a particular group of people. The scene at the
beginning of the film, portrays grown Alice, and the mother headed to the garden party. On
their way, the mother asks Alice about wearing stockings, which Alice does not approve of
and therefore does not have them on. This demonstrates that there is that particular culture of
stockings as part of the British culture in that era, something Alice may be trying to break
free. Flegar & Wertag (2015), note that "Alice remained consistent and strict, unable to
accept the world which a typical child of the time was expected to embrace without question,
and easily committed herself to being an adult."
The other instance where culture is evident is at the garden party when Hamish
proposes to Alice in front of all the party attendees. Hamish comes from quite a reputable or
noble family, meaning that Alice can be seen as lucky in society. The culture of proposing to
people whom one wishes to marry also comes out as a form of communication of one's love
and intentions. It is also evident that it is in the culture for people to have these as surprises,
and there is the expectation that the girl would always say yes. This is evidenced in Alice's
talk with the friend who tells Alice to say yes because, "if it's not the Lord, then who?" the
