Summary
I am writing to request your approval for primary research on the current age-related diversity in
the organization and how it affects staff and their work.
What the Problem is and Why it Needs to be Investigated
The company has a very homogenous workforce which is a problem when it comes to diversity
and inclusivity. An overview of the ages of employees in the organization shows that the average
age of employees is 48 years. Most employees range from 40 to 55 years of age hence
representing basically a single generation of workers. Age homogeneity is a problem in the
workplace because it does not integrate diversity and neither does it reflect representation of the
average American population in the workplace. This homogeneity presents a big problem for the
company.
As a service-oriented organization, the company requires a representative workforce which
understands and represents the needs and values of the general population. While the company
has ensured diversity and inclusivity in terms of gender, race, and religious background, it has
failed to do the same for age. The current workforce is a representation of only a small segment
of the American population and the company misses out on the benefits that an age-diverse
workforce may produce. Therefore, the main challenge the company is facing is the acceptance
of change towards a more age-diverse population as well as the means to ensure that generational
diversity is integrated in the organization.
What Secondary Research I Have Conducted about the Problem
I have conducted a critical literature review on the subject of workplace generational diversity
and found that many scholars agree on the benefits of diversity. In my secondary research, I
collected peer-reviewed, scholarly, scholarly journal articles on the topic. Findings presented in
these articles highlight the alignment of generational diversity with long-term boost of
productivity and enhancement of organizations innovation. One major challenge I found out is
that many managers struggle to manage such age-diverse workforce in the beginning. However,
when they create a positive work environment and enhance norming, such teams have been
proved to be more productive and innovative than homogeneous teams. This secondary research
validates the need for generational diversity in the workplace.
What Primary Research I Will Conduct about the Problem
With your approval, I will conduct primary research with employees in the organization to
determine the fit of generational diversity to the companys workplace. The planned primary
