TOXICOLOGY OF PERMETHRIN AND SACCHARIN 2
Toxicology of Permethrin and Saccharin
Health concern regarding household products is on the rise due to fears that they have
chemicals compounds with the potential of causing cancer in humans. Permethrin and saccharin
are among the chemicals commonly used in households whose toxicology has drawn the
attention of scholars and the public. Permethrin is a common compound found in insecticides
and helps control insects while saccharin is a sweetener used in various products, including
medicine, candies, and cookies. While these chemicals are common in households, researchers
have failed to come to a consensus regarding their toxicology to rats and the potential to cause
cancer in humans.
Does data generated on rats directly correlate to effects on humans?
While studies on permethrin and saccharin show their abilities to cause cancer in rats,
there exist insufficient findings to demonstrate their effects on humans. For instance, Yamada et
al. (2015) conducted a study to examine the effects of permethrin on Club cells in mice. The
researchers used the International Programme on Chemical Safety Human Relevance Framework
to determine the potential carcinogenic effects of permethrin on humans. They found that since
humans are less sensitive to chemicals that influence Club cell changes in mice, it is less likely
for permethrin to cause lung tumors in people. This might be because the anatomy, metabolism,
respiratory rate, metastatic frequency, and tumor histogenesis in mouse lung and tumors are
different from humans (Cohen et al., 2020). Similarly, while the introduction of saccharin on rats
depicts an increased risk for bladder cancer, studies on humansfail to show a clear association of
consuming the chemical and elevated risk of tumors. This is because the mechanisms in rats that
lead to an elevated risk of cancer are unique to them but irrelevant to humans. Particularly,
saccharin damages cells in the lining of rats' bladders, promoting bladder growth (Stern, 2015).
