BIASED PROFILING 2
Biased Profiling using Artificial Intelligence
Introduction
The use of police surveillance technologies such as artificial intelligence is one of the
dilemmas in law enforcement. Technological advancements such as the use of facial recognition
enable police to respond to crime issues in society. The law enforcement agencies seem keen to
capitalize on the potential of artificial intelligence. However, they fail to consider the measures
needed to avoid harm and injustice to the public. Concerns emerge over unwillingness by the law
enforcement agencies to disclose the tools they use for surveillance.
The dilemma in Using Artificial Intelligence for Law Enforcement
There are different artificial intelligence technologies in the police department in the
United States, but the public lacks accurate information about the legal and ethical implications
of the tools. The non-routine techniques and procedures used by law enforcement agencies with
no profound elaboration create the impression of the use of untested surveillance that could
undermine the privacy and confidentiality of people. The new tools are expensive to the
taxpayers and raise critical questions about the risk of bias and threats to civil liberties (Heilweil,
2020). One of the worries about the use of artificial intelligence is that it contributes to
discriminative arrests and incarcerations. The high rates of incarcerations reveal vulnerability of
more people to biased profiling (Portilho, 2019). The technology increase racial bias since law
enforcement agencies could factor in or manipulate data on various crimes (Heilweil, 2020). The
argument that some police departments act in ways that impact negatively on communities of
colour reveal the dilemma involving the use of digital forensic tools. False data has severe
implications on the lives of the targeted individuals.
