James is a 35-year-old man that has had a long-term problem of panic attacks, alcoholism, and
depression. He is married to a 30-year-old-woman, Michelle, whom he claims is not supportive
in taking care of his situation recently compared to the first one-and-a-half years of their
marriage. James has come to see me, a therapist, to find if he can find a potential solution to his
problem despite having previous sessions with community health workers and a psychologist.
Below is a hypothetical dialogue (Interview) between me and James subject to developing a
therapeutic relationship, goal-setting, and treatment planning.
Me (Therapist): Good morning, James. I am glad to have this session with you. Like you told
me via the email, I got a gist of your problem, but I am here to get the details and see how I can
help.
James (Client): I am doing good, but not so good, because of the long-term challenge that I
have had to deal with, regardless of the many attempts that I have made to live a normal life. I
really hope to get a substantial help from you. I am ready to follow the instructions, listen keenly,
and see how this will end.
Me: I understand your situation Mr. James, but can go into the details of your problem please.
James: Sure. I am desperate and almost running out of options. I never understood my problem
