HOT TOPIC IN NURSING PROFESSION 2
Week 6 hot topic will cover ethical issues relating to nursing and how nurses can
maintain their dignity and wellbeing when dispensing various duties. Reports of nurses facing
disciplinary actions for failing to uphold their professional ethics are not uncommon. This
week’s story was published by a British news outlet, the Guardian, on August 13, 2020. In this
article, Emmarie Huetteman reported that nurses working in US hospitals in New Jersey were
being forced to work despite exhibiting COVID 19 symptoms (Huetteman, 2020). One nurse,
who spoke to the Guardian, stated that she had tested positive for Covid-19 and was required to
quarantine for at least fourteen days. However, the employer insisted that she risked being fired
if she failed to return to work within two days. While the nurse did not have a fever, she felt
weak and exhibited other symptoms like coughing. According to Huetteman (2020), majority of
healthcare facilities have failed to provide adequate paid leaves to their staff, forcing them to
work even when doing so pose a risk to them, and others.
The nursing issues reflected in this story are workplace safety and self-care. The health
workers are forces to choose between maintaining their work and their health, not to mention the
risk of infecting fellow employees and patients with the virus. The pressure imposed by the
employer has left the employees in a dilemma on whether to prioritize their own safety or
maintain their professional responsibility. At the same time, the nurses know they could be
spreading the infectious disease to their colleagues, or even patients whom they are supposed to
assist and protect. Statistics show that approximately 922 frontline health workers have
succumbed to Covid 19 related complications, which are mostly acquired at work (Huetteman,
2020). CDC made the recommendations of clearing workers who contacted Covid-19 due to the
staffing shortage. In this case however, nurses are pressured to go back to work to offset severe
staff shortage.
