What is the most effective treatment for hypertension in African Americans?
Hypertension is prevalent in African-Americans and, therefore, the need to determine the
blood pressure before initiating any treatment. African American patients with hypertension have
a reduced amount of renin activity, a hormone responsible for controlling blood pressure. For
this reason, ARBs and ACE are not effective and therefore use of Thiazide Diuretics is
considered the best treatment method to use. This include treatments such as chlorthalidone or
hydrochlorothiazide. However, chlorthalidone is more preferable to give the evidence in
improved outcomes. The drug is also potent and acts longer. The patient may also be
administered with calcium channel blockers, such as amlodipine to control blood pressure
(Gibson & Gibbons, 2016).
The African Americans are associated with incidences of cerebrovascular complications
and also renal complications. In addition to the reduced renin activity, the treatment method is
different from the method used in the treatment of white Americans. This is the reason as to why
the diuretics are the first treatment line as it has proven more effective. The treatment is
connected to increased salt sensitivity, reduced-sodium and potassium ion ATPase activity in the
African Americans (Gibson & Gibbons, 2016).
