Rob Parsons Promotion Dilemma
Every organization has a distinct corporate culture; Morgan Stanley is no exception. The
company has built its name on teamwork and coordination. As such, Morgan Stanley makes use
of 360 degrees evaluation in assessing the productivity of its employees. Working in a
challenging position, the principal is Rob Parson. His comprehensive market knowledge and
industrious nature are impressive. The principal, however, has challenges blending in the
organizational culture, which embraces teamwork. Is the senior managing director, Paul Nasr,
placed to merit the promotion of such a resourceful yet frustrated employee?
Prior to hiring Rob Parson, Nasr was well-informed about his previous work background
hence the trouble with fitting in at Morgan Stanley. Although Rob had inter-personal issues in
the past, his aggressive and unique personality was just what Nasr needed to grow business at
Morgan Stanley. Using colleagues’ views to dismiss the efforts of an individual sole whose work
had improved the market share from 2% to 12.2%, moving the company from position 10 to an
impressive position three is irrational. The biggest flaw of 360-degree evaluation is that the
criterion breeds ground for animosity and impartial judgment while growing undue hatred.
In my opinion, Rob deserves a promotion. Regardless of the acrimonious evaluation
report from his co-workers, Rob’s position was challenging and required managerial support. In
addition, Rob Parson had an excellent relationship with clients, who found him interesting and
his company intriguing. Denying him the promotion would put Morgan Stanley at risk of losing
him, which would translate in fewer clients and a lower market share as a result. This decision,
however, would set such a bad impression with employees as they would question the fairness of
