INTRODUCTION
The Java programming language has become one of the most popular programming languages due to its
power and cross-platform functionality. This lesson will exam the history of the Java language and discuss the
features that make this language a popular choice for beginner and advanced programmers.

History
In relative terms, Java is a fairly new programming language. Java was created in 1991 by James
Gosling, who worked for a large computer corporation. Java was initially only used internally by the company.
The internal version of Java was intended to be used for consumer electronic devices, and these projects failed
to gain momentum. However, the Internet was becoming popular at the time, and Java was a good fit for
programming Internet functionality.
In 1995, Java was incorporated in an Internet browser, and Java started its growth as a popular
programming language. Java is now used as the programming language for applications on a wide variety of

devices, including desktop computers, mobile devices, games systems, and Internet applications. Java is used
for business applications, games, and specialized devices for a wide variety of purposes.
In 2010, the control of Java was passed to another information technology solutions company. The
company continues to advance the state of Java and provides support for the language, and the company offers a
wide variety of tutorials and documentation. Java now includes many core libraries and is well-supported with
third-party add-ons.
Open Source
One of the reasons Java is popular is because it is available as an open-source product. Open source
means the underlying source code is available to the public so programmers can examine the code and make
changes if necessary. Open-source software is also free to use, and developers often enhance open-source
products and create useful add-ons. Java is available under the GNU General Public License (GPL), which is
the standard in open-source software. Although not all parts of Java are available as open source, a project
called OpenJDK makes large portions of the Java language available as open source. Other organizations have
also produced open-source versions of Java.
Java Features
Java was developed to be powerful, relatively easy to use, and versatile. One of the goals of Java is to
write the source code for an application and run the same code on multiple target system architectures, or cross-
platform compatibility. Java achieves this goal to a high degree due to the design of the Java system. Some of
the features of Java that help meet the goals for the language include the following:
