Medical costs have been a significant impediment to access to quality care among various
nations worldwide. As countries strive to offer accessible and affordable care to their citizens,
there have been established policies that have proved essential to realizing quality care that is
affordable to every citizen. One such approach is the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The act got
established to reduce the cost of health insurance coverage for the individual who qualifies. The
ACA incorporates premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions to reduce costs for lower-
income families and individuals. Besides, since its establishment, the law has had massive
impacts on the IOM’s since dimensions of healthcare performance and the uninsured rates in the
American Healthcare System.
The components of the six IOM’s dimensions are; safe, effective, patient-centred, timely,
efficient and equitable. The ACA has had a significant impact on the dimensions. For instance,
establishing the act has ensured a provision of care that does not vary in quality due to personal
characteristics like gender, socioeconomic status or ethnicity (equitable) (Slonim & Pollack,
2005). Also, more patients can now access care to help prevent harm to the patients, getting the
intended help from their medical facilities (safe). Most importantly, the hospitals are now
equipped with certified and knowledgeable medical practitioners who provide care depended on
scientific knowledge to all who benefit from the program (effective) through the care plan.
The program has also facilitated the provision of care that is responsive and respectful to
the patients' needs, values, and preferences (patient-centred) while guiding clinical decisions.
Also, through affordable care, the medical care provider has been timely, eliminating the harmful
delays involved in striving to settle high costs of medical care by the patients (timely). Lastly, the
